NPP shows perm wall in a light orange - a feature I rather liked. I'd recommend to do the same for vanilla (by default).

When you are done, you can save it to a pref file, using 'save options to pref file' in the options -- '=' -- menu. (If you choose the player's name, it will automatically load those options when you reopen the game.)
That is pretty neat. I never really messed with the visuals before. I just switched from ascii to graphics old tiles identified the granite walls switched back to ascii and started digging.

But for a newcomer to the game I still think

how to turn off sound? or adjust it would be better...

I thought I had done it before, but for some reason I can not find sound controls in 3.0.9

For now, turning off would be fine. In the future, I would like to find a way to adjust game volume separate from player/speaker vol.

Some music needs to be loud to fully hear it, and at that those volumes, game sounds can be rather unpleasant

edit: I went and moved the sound files, as a temp fix. Any suggestions on where to find more about volume control?
