    fast games

I just had a winner HT paladin at level 46 with a turn count of 530.000 which I think from comparing with other ladder entries counts as pretty fast. So where there competitions for fastest game? Say in vanilla 3.5. what is the lowest turn count you can win in? What is the lowest char level/ total xp to win? What race, class combo would you choose for that?
I would guess HT would be a good choice here, regen speeds up the early game a lot and HTs have more HP at level 40 than hobbits at level 50, so if you don't need any of the high level spells you don't have to level up all the way. My bet would be for a HT ranger. Anyone up for a challenge/ competetion?

Most previous competitions have been sorted by turncount, and those competitions get their own leaderboards. The most recent Vanilla Angband competition win was 76,129 turns, and could have been faster.

There was a player some time ago in here that got absolutely magical turncounts. Like ~100000 game turns to win. Way less for player turns obviously, but at that time game didn't count player turns. Unfortunately I have forgotten his name.

If you look at Fizzix winning competition char even that used nearly 500k game turns.

Something about 60-70k game turns. Faster then this is really hard, 100k is normal for a 'fast' game, when you avoid wasting time, 300-500k for a clean every level ironman style.

Are you sure you mean game turns, not "standard turns" which is player turns?

Under 500k game turns is fast, less than 100k would be insanely fast. That would be like ~20k player turns.

I looked at game turns for my char, which is the 530000, standard turns I only used 73935, so I beat fizzix but then I think a human is much harder/ slower than a HT.

I think I remember the guy you're talking about. He used to beat ZAngband within a single 24-hour span, things like that. Of course, ZAngband had Mindcrafters, who had a targeted-teleport ability; you can really cut your travel times down when you don't need to visit every tile along the path between point A and point B.

He won zangband game in approx 10k game turns using that. I think he got bored with angband soon after, at least he disappeared from forum/news.

BTW winning in single 24 hour span does not require fast turncount, I can do and have done that in angband in game that used over million game turns. Unfortunately RL is in way now to repeat that.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that the two were related, just that he was interested in winning the game "quickly", for various definitions of that word.

His name was Lev, if we're talking about the Z guy. Cliff Stamp was also insanely fast at V, but did not play Z IIRC.

Anything under 50k player turns (500k standard turns) is fast. Under 25k is awe-inspiring.

Cliff was/is insanely fast and inspiring, but Lev was basically magical. A level above everyone else in optimizing turncounts. He was basically through stat-gain when I was entering dungeon first time after shopping for essentials.

The fastest game I can think of in my memory is this one by Psi, which used excessive stair scumming. This game by PowerDiver is faster, but it's not on an actual release, and I'm pretty sure it was on a nightly build with too generous drops. PowerDiver has a lot of fast runs, including some very fast ironman runs. I have only vague memories of Lev.

It is rough to compare between versions. 3.5 is faster than 3.4 but slower than 3.3 or 3.2.

As for myself, I've always considered myself secondary to the truly fast players. There are lots of optimizations that I really don't bother with, especially in town. It just happens that the way I like to play the game these days tends to result in a reasonably low turn count. I think if Eddie came back he would crush my times handily.

There's also fast in real time playing, which is certainly not me...

I get opposite. I find fast games boring because of those optimizations. Also I usually get one or two GV:s in each game that are just too tempting to not clear, which usually require quite a lot of time. One CGV or bigger can take 1/3 of your "optimized" turncount to clear. Especially if it requires lots of digging with poor digging equipments.

As result I get really poor turncounts, even when my RL game times are not that bad (less than 20 hours from start to finish).

No, actually, I think we're mostly on the same page as far as what is fun and what is boring. I don't really go out of my way to optimize.

I guess the difference might be that I get somewhat bored of clearing out vaults and just stop sometimes halfway through.
