I just wondered today, why doesn't telepathy (one of the most powerful abilities in the game) not have a temporary version?
Other powerful abilities - speed, resistances, ac, to-hit, to-dam, have temporary boosts - why not have mushrooms of telepathy, that the player can
Likely candidate moments to use them could include:
Presumably would be no less 'unbalancing' than permanent telepathy (dependant on drop rate and duration) and would add a few interesting choices for the player.
If you already had permenant telepathy, perhaps having the temporary boost grants you detection of those creatures that usually are only sometimes detected (like fleas etc). Instead/regardless, once you have permanent telepathy, you could set them to squelch.

- find
- decide whether to spend an inventory slot on them
- decide when best to use them.
Likely candidate moments to use them could include:
- vaults
- levels with give strong feelings
- when dangerous/Unique monsters have been found on the level
- before teleporting and on low HP (probably wouldn't want to use a turn eating)
- when around Invisible monsters (with minds) with no direct See/Sense/Detect Invisible option available
