bhahahah!!! gauntlets of power (+5 +3) <+5> for sale in the armory. And I have enough to buy 'em! Deepest I've gone is only dl12 and i'm a cl18. I also found a ring of strength <+1> on dl8 I think. My melee is 36.9 without the gauntlets. I'm thinking it will go up to about ~50 with. Also found full plate armor good for [+62] on dl10 or dl11. Very good level feeling. This game is turning out to be pretty good so far. Going to leave my spell book at home for awhile as the heavy armor is making me pretty invincible to the majority of stuff I'm dealing with right now, plus I have a rod of trap detection. Melee is now 67.3 yayy! and AC 113.

DL17 "scraps of junk" and scouts drop Dethanc and 600 gold coins worth of adamantite before I'm out of the hallway surrounding the beginning room. Suah. Jeezus, just found a robe of resistance on the same level.

Teleport Self is 7 for a Mage, 13 for a Ranger, and 22 for a Rogue. Phase Door on the other hand, worst case is only 9.
Portal is 5 for Priest, 9 for Paladin.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but all that good luck means some evil monster is gonna breathe on you for 121728 damage pretty soon.

I found some randart bow the other day that was branded with lightning that let me do 200 a shot with regular arrows by clvl 10! Of course I got too arrogant and got killed by some air hounds

Hahah, and yet, until then, I continue to find "something worthwhile here": Just quaffed a speckled yellow potion on dl20: You feel more experienced.

..and just picked up the shield of the Haladrim. Feeling healthier and stronger <+2> Jeezus... does the good news never end? It's a shield of power! (+5, +5) man... I haven't been this well equipped on dl96.... When aimed, the shield turns me into a killing machine. lol, the effect lasts longer than it takes to recharge. In other words, I can be in a berserk mode.. ...all the time... No, I suppose the good news does not ever end. Christmas comes early this year. Oh snap, I didn't even notice, but the shield sustains constitution and provides rPoison! Wappledoo! Is there anything this shield doesn't do? Daang. And it still says I don't know the full extend of this item's power. I assume if it was aggravating monsters nearby I would know about it right now. I'm a little shocked it doesn't have any negative feature about it.

Back in town, the rapier of extra attacks I picked up as well sold for over $10,000 which is good since there were plenty of fine items to purchase in the black market (a ring of damage, armor of resistance [16, +6] and rod of curing.

Well, the MAng version of Haradrim aggravates, so many players tend to avoid it, but I dunno how that translates to Vanilla.

To those saying OP isn't prepared... how exactly do you get prepared? Do you snooze on levels way too easy for you, and scum the town for key items(which the town doesn't ever want to have in stock - at least the MAng shops restock pretty quickly) until you're positive you have everything you need to survive?

Not everyone can tolerate that kind of careful playstyle... hell, I'm losing Berserkers in PosCheng right now, because after every death I'm in an even bigger hurry to get back to my former power level as soon as possible. If I can't play a Berserker safely, there's no way in hell that, in that mindset, I have the patience for a Mirror Master or a Quylthulg, or a Vanilla mage, for that matter.

Even when I'm in a calmer, slower mood, and deliberately trying to play cautiously, something bad invariably happens and I lose the character anyway.

For those of you who are able to play very slowly and calculate every move as if it were a game of chess, that style is well and good, but you have to realize that it's not going to make for an enjoyable gaming experience for a large number of players.

I'm not suggesting that the OP play in a massively cautious, deliberate style. I'm suggesting that he have and make use of escape items, and should put a priority on getting access to them.

I mean, you wouldn't see people complaining about having to stock healing potions before fighting the Tarrasque. I don't think this situation is especially different.

As for the town, I don't usually have a problem with buying a Staff of Teleportation, and Phase Door is available in infinite quantity.

"prepared" is not as much of items than how to play. "run away" is a good advice and if you can't do that then something is wrong. Even when you can kill ordinary monsters at your level sooner or later you will get into fight you can't handle, so items granting escape are pretty much necessity for survival. Realizing and acting on that is preparation.

Escapes come in many forms, phase door is one, but it starts way before you need to use that. First step in escape is realizing that you are heading into situation you can't handle, and avoid that. Speed and stealth help, and those are the main "escape" methods once detecting that situation has been made. So detection is first and main escape. Detect your surroundings. Simple "don't go there" in first place is best "escape".

Sometimes offense is best escape. Like when fighting surprise umber hulk. If you try to heal confusion you just run out of healing. If you try to run away you don't do damage and don't heal either and chances are that you can't escape. So hit it. Even confused you move at the right direction more often than not so you can usually kill or make it run away with just few blows.

Passive defenses like resistances are less important, you can survive in dungeon almost naked if you just know what to fight and are aware of them.
