no Phial?

So of my 3-4 characters ever to reach this far (about experience level 20 and 1000'), I'm on my first to not have found the Phial.

It's quite disconcerting to me. But how unusual is it? Am I going to find it eventually (I'm in preserve mode) or is it unlikely to be found at this depth and below? It's not vital, I guess, but I'd really like to clear up the inventory slot that I'm currently using on oil. (I can get the light-up-the-room effect from prayers, since I'm a paladin.)

I also haven't found any artifacts at all yet, though I've found some nice ego items including some Dragon Scale Mail, so I'm not ready to curse out the RNG just yet, except I miss the Phial...

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you... I usually don't find any Artifacts until dungeon level 25-35. Before then I'm happy to find any out of depth excellent objects that I can find...
Around dlvl 35 I usually find an Artifact every other OTHER *OTHER* **OTHER** dive. Which is pretty common in my book... Any other thoughts...

My paladin is having the same luck, no artifacts... as a matter of fact none of my chars in 3.0.9 have found one... but wormy and bullroarer have donated 2 currently used ego items a warhammer of *slay evil* and a sling of extra shots +1... only been to 950' so far

just waiting to happen upon orfax he usually good for the phial if wormy didn't drop it

One of my recent characters died somewhere around DL38, using a Lantern (Everburning) for a light. I hadn't found anything else at that point.

Haha, the honeymoon is over! I came across this same thing with my first Angband characters as well. I got used to, and even expected to see the phial by 150', but now I don't see it till I start knocking off some of the named orcs between 800'-1000' on average.

If your playing style hasn't changed then it's just luck, but I'd wager that since this is your latest character you are mowing through the earlier levels a little faster, anxious to get back to the more exciting depths.

It seemed that my first few characters found the phial early on...I had one that found it around 250'. My current character prowled around looking for it and didn't find it until around 1750'. It was sitting in a massive greater vault full of artifacts. Finding it was a bit anticlimactic, since I was pawing through all of the other new stuff, trying to determine which ones I would keep.
