[3.5 dev] Tiny bug in dev 581 (permanent scrolls!)

In the latest dev version, Oct 10 dev 581, there seems a tiny bug regarding scrolls. If you read them while still on the ground, you get the benefit of reading the scroll, but the scroll remains and you can read it again, and again, and again - as long as you don't pick it up. Same is true for potions, if you drink them without picking them up, they don't disappear. I just restored mana to full without losing the potion! Also found ?Mass Banishment, carried it around dropping it, reading it, picking it back up, carrying it to the next pit, dropping it, reading it, picking it back up. Definitely a bug in this latest version.

Also generating funky messages. Read a ?Enchant Armor (on the ground) the scroll remained and got the following messages:

You have no room for a Scroll of Enchant Armour.
Your Pair of Ethereal Slippers of Speed glows brightly!
    The enchantment failed.
You see no more Books of Magic Spells [Conjuring and Tricks].
You have no room for a Scroll of Enchant Armour.

Conjuring and Tricks? Looks like it tries to get rid of the scroll, but doesn't and says its getting rid of something that isn't there.

“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Figured out the bizarre messages. Rather than causing the scroll or potion read or quaffed from the ground to disappear, some other item from the level is caused to disappear.

Was the scroll already identified when you first tried using it?

Edit: Nevermind, it's happening in all cases.

I noticed that with a rune of protection scroll in 3.0.9b. I ended up with a room of runes...

A mutation of this bug still exists in the 11 Oct dev-583 version. The floor reading seems fixed, scrolls and potions appropriately disappear and rods, wands and staves used on the floor appropriately show the use of a charge. But the following just happened after reading a Scroll of Word of Recall from the town:

The air about you becomes charged...
You have 2 Scrolls of Word of Recall (g)
You were holding a Light Crossbow of Extra Might (x4) (+7,+11) <+1> (q)
          You drop a Light Crossbow of Extra Might (x4) (+7,+11) <+1> {q)
You have no more Light Crossbow of Extra Might (x4) (+7,+11) <+1> (q)
          Cannot select floor!
          You feel yourself yanked downwards!

What?! Freak'n bug stole my shooter! Didn't realize it until I went to shoot the first monster I came across. It feels bad enough when I lose because of my own stupid mistakes, but this is adding insult to injury! I know I didn't drop the weapon. Maybe I read the scroll while I was standing on the stairs? I don't remember, but it's possible, so maybe that's where the bug lays?

Oh, well. Guess I'll wait for the next dev version and then try to survive long enough to replace the shooter.

Squelch is also busted again. Squelching an Iron Crown of Light from the inventory menu, the only options were squelch this item only or squelch all non-artifact. So, the Crown of Light must be a superb ego item - yeah, right.

Unless things have changed recently, the top "tier" of item quality (just below artifact) is "splendid", which just means that it has some bonus that is obvious when you wield it. The light radius the crown gives qualifies. So this isn't a bug...it's just a sign of how hard it is to automatically create squelch categories that match what the player wants.

Thanks, Derakon, for that clarification. I'd always assumed the squelch was tied to quality of the item, but now I understand it a little better. Is there someplace that I can read up on what the squelch categories entail? Nevermind: I just found your thread with Fizzix regarding squelch design. Definitely a lot of competing considerations that are difficult to automate. I didn't know that an obvious bonus upon wielding was what qualified an item as "splendid", but now I understand it.

Once I get a descent artifact helm, I squelch all non-artifact helms, but auto-inscribe all the crowns with !k so that I don't miss a crown of serenity (that RStun is pretty hard to come by). Same for Scythes of Slicing, Blades of Chaos and Maces of Disruption, although the new Great Weapons category may cover those now. Wish we could separate out Elvenkind and Dwarven armors the way Dragonscale is now separated. But then the list gets even larger, Gondolin, Extra Attacks, Defender, etc., etc., etc.

Is there anything else you can remember about this? I've tried recalling with a full inventory, both on and off stairs, and I can't reproduce this.

Sorry, I don't remember much else about it. I assumed it was connected to the squelch problem where the item r/q/u/z/a on the floor would remain or not have a charge removed, but some other item would disappear. That "Cannot select floor!" message there at the end makes me suspect it's something of that nature. But I read the scroll from my inventory, so don't know what happened. @ died shortly thereafter - far too deep when suddenly without that great missile launcher.
