Protection from Evil scrolls

I have a question I haven't found anywhere on the forums or internet.

Protection of Evil scrolls say that they have a chance to repel evil attacks, unless the monster's level is higher than your level.

Where do I find the monster's level? Is this the level where the monster is normally found, according to its description?

Correct. The monster's native depth is its level. Thus a white icky thing is level 1, no matter where in the dungeon you encounter it.

I'm also pretty sure it only protects you against them physically attacking you. Spells seem unaffected. I think breath attacks and ranged attacks are also unaffected.
