    mumak xp

I just run into a group of mumaks and I was wondering why they give so mch xp. At 80 armor rating, 500 life, normal speed and no ranged attack they are very similar to some of the more dangerous troll varieties. But killing a mumak gives 2200 xp for my level 33 character while the trolls would give something like 200.
Are they meant to be a free xp present, or am I missing something that makes them more dangerous?

The first one, I think. They're certainly overvalued, and are very handy for accelerating XP gain. By the time you've reached CL33 you should be gobbling up vrocks as well.

Yeah, they're xp fountains. It partially stems from an idea in Angband that monsters need not be perfectly balanced, and having outliers (more dangerous, more lucrative, completely worthless to kill, etc/) monsters are a good thing. It also partially stems from game changes that have the unintended effects of making certain monsters weaker or stronger.

It's hard to know exactly where mumaks fall in all of this.

Well, they aren't Evil. I can clear whole rooms of trolls with a couple of Dispel Evil staves/staffs.

That is the point. They give pretty good XP, but don't have a drop. It's always a tradeoff, and depends purely on your current character stats. In comparison, a single Ancient dragon gives as much XP as a group of Mumak, and has a better drop.
