    from Maggot to Morgoth

If I were to write a book about Angband, that would be my title.

Now that I have your attention, I would like to share some ideas that I believe would make the game better. I don't believe these changes are so extreme that they wouldn't fit in vanilla. v4 would also be a good home.

Included as well are a couple inconsistencies I've caught.
    • The element rings (ring of ice/fire/etc)should provide immunity to their related element. Currently they are obsolete by the time they start showing up. They may still be, but it is a step in the left direction.
    • Boots of Stability should guard against chaos. This one just seems right to me.
    • The priest and paladin both have 3 spells to bless themselves. Along with a few scrolls and a staff I think. This spell isn't even that useful. +5 AC/+10 to hit with about 10 ways to achieve this waste of time late game? This should be changed. Many potential routes we could take with this one.
    • Could we get an HLife immunity modifier? like the immunities of the elements. Except nullifying all XP drain. Nothing annoys me like losing 6 levels early in a good feeling level and re acquiring an hour worth of XP because I can't find a damn potion
    • A light radius of 1, on an artifact of any shape, is less of an addition to my effectiveness, than is the hair on my ass.
    • (my point being maybe it could be a +1 to total light radius?)
    • The term window item list: Can we shade unidentified equipment differently? As is done for artifacts and unidentified jewelry and devices. It would help in a vault when you are wading through 3 feet of steel and leather war spoils.
    • I think having a one page limit on your home is an unnecessary limitation. Besides, it's your house! and your never home. Just put that on top of the pile on top of the refrigerator.
    • I'm loving the direction of the user friendly interface over the past many changes since I started playing in the 2.8.3 era. Like how most menus are now navigable via arrow commands. Every menu save your standard inventory and equipment displays. Is there a reason for the absence of this particular feature?
    • I am playing my first Paladin. Pretty badass character. He has an elemental brand spell at clevel 47. This spell adds either cold or fire to a non-artifact, non-ego weapon. I can't imagine a situation that anyone would ever find this helpful. And I can imagine up to the 10th dimension.
    • Is there a way to save your term window size/shape? It'd be a lot cooler if there was. I have to fine tune my windows every session. I'm OCD like that.
    • Hit dice typically read: #D#+# (eg 3D6+2) not in many spell readouts for spells such as bless and resist fire. These read: eg 24+1D24 ....backwards. Unacceptable...jk Nothing major
    • Your magic reserves are measured in SP, yet is also referred to as "manapoints" in many spell readouts and possibly elsewhere. Also unacceptablejknothingmajor...
    • What does the shatter in hit to shatter, as in Morgoth? I assume he can obliterate pieces of armor? Does this happen to artifacts?

I have ideas such as these every time I play. I started writing them down today. If people appreciate these, I will start sharing my thoughts more frequently

I didn't mention: the full title of that book would read: from Maggot to Morgoth: Spelunking Isn't What it Sounds Like

I am pretty sure light sources on all equipment are cumulative already.
If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.

Hmmm... I suppose that may be true. I am now realizing that I have never paid that close attention. I admit to my possibly faulty assumption.

          Light is cumulative.

That spell ... is a compensation for the Bedlam spell for Rogues. ^^

Immunity on rings would be to powerful, I think.
I never use them though in their current state. Maybe if they would cover two (random) combinations?

Even with the immunity, they start showing up around the same time as the ring of speed, so until speed is less important, or they show up earlier, I still wouldn't see myself using them. Currently, insta-squelch them. And why get the elemental brand so late? People beat the game before they even get the spell, being available first at character level ˇ****47****!

Immunities make very powerful swaps. GHellWyrm with fire immunity is a pushover.

They used to do this, but it was way too powerful. Yet with the current vanilla angband model there isn't anything they can be that's not broken or underpowered. Suggestions welcome I guess?

                Everything else sounds good though

Ah. That, my friend, makes sense. Personally I find swaps more tedium then I can tolerate, so the concept is absent from both my arsenal of in-game tactics as well as from my train of thought with this particular situation. Maybe I should revisit the strategy to reevaluate its worthiness?

If they showed up like 20-30 they would probably fit nicely, I would think

Shatter is earthquake-attack. It obliterates you. Seriously, two consecutive earthquake crushes + other M damage from them can cause something like 800 points of damage. Don't fight in closed space where earthquake can't displace you.

Earlier they could be of some use (while one sometimes still wears resistance rings ...).
The ball spell activation is at least of some use for earlier chars.
I believe we have been discussing this before.

Did they? I remember them giving elemental brand for any melee-weapon and that was seriously overpowered feature. I don't recall them giving immunity. IMO immunity would be less powerful than brand.

Oh! New thought: the element rings, if nothing else, should have an activation for magical protection of related element, providing double defense in one package. Which is almost like immunity, only weaker

Ok, that explains the level l falling apart. I thought it was just the earthquake spell, the single solitary time I met him. And it is the raw magic storm that kills. 600+ damage
