new to rogue-like games, Q about saving

Hello all, Angband is the first game of its type that I have ever played and I have spent the last couple days trying it out and learning how to play. I have found the permadeath to be pretty unforgiving and was wondering if there is a way to save? maybe a mod or something?

"Save" is listed on the title bar, but if I use it and try to load, nothing happens . . . anyway, I am loving this game and will probably continue to play it even if I have to start being ultra careful with my characters.

Lastly, any tips for a new player on staying alive?

There is always possibility of ‘save scumming’, i.e. backuping your savefile and copying it back in case of your death, but if I were you, I wouldn't do that. Without the constant danger of sudden death, most of the fun is gone. Without it there is no pressure to improve your playing skills.

Since I am rather poor player myself, I am not the right person to give advices. Read this forum, take a look at the ladder, be patient, careful and try to learn from your mistakes. And have a fun.

It is possible to back up games by copying a save file. It is also a form of cheating, known as save-scumming. The point of roguelikes is that you don't get more than one chance: death is permanent, so you need to run away a lot.

That said, there are a lot of tips. For instance: run away. I posted some tips a few days ago in this thread. Did I mention running away?

        Welcome to band

Yes you can save the game, and then load the same character later, if and only if your character does not die. If/When your character dies, the save file is deleted.

You should be able to load a character (that didn't die) by typing in their character name if I recall correctly. I think the last living character played will autoload when you start the game back up.

        1. Keep track each time your character dies about what killed you, and try to avoid that situation in the future.

        2. You don't have to kill all the monsters. Staying alive is more important, so if you get in a tight spot, run away. If that fails, Phase Door or Teleport away. If that fails, you're probably learning something.

        3. Prioritize CON and Speed boosts over other stats, but don't neglect free action or your resists.
