    Item name: !Slow Poison

I'm a long time rgra lurker but only just joined the forum...
I'm still playing V3.0.5, dunno if I'm missing much but hey it's working for me so why change

Anyway... one item which has always confused the hell outa me is
    ! of Slow Poison

Upon identifying this potion, I was like "gee, a weak version of ! of poison".

What's wrong with "! of cure poison"?

!Slow Poison only reduces the amount you are poisioned by.
!Neutralise Poison reduces it to nothing.

OK, so I wasn't specific enough...
!CLW is a "lightweight hitpoint restorer"
so on through !CSW, CCW, Healing, *Healing*, LIFE.

What would be wrong with !cure light poison, !cure poison

just from the point of more straight-forward names? Ones that actually mean something to the poor newbies?

An alternative would be ! of ease poison, it's a lot closer in style to neutralise poison without the ambiguous meaning of "it's a slow (acting) poison)".

Mind you, if you want to go for fully flavoursome names I'm all for that, too.... just if you are going to do that, then ditch all the would curing names except !o Life. Just don't ask me what to rename them as.

I've been playing since frog-knows - I do know what the potions do. I've got a couple of dumps here too although that's not really representative of my playing history (I just couldn't be arsed dumping crap characters onto the ladder).

I tend to agree. "Slow poison" would be better named "Reduce poison" or "Ease poison" or something. For that matter, I never understood why the rings are called "poison resistance" when they really seem more like ignore than resist.

AFAIK if you ignore you also don't take associated damage... =Poison Resistance doesn't let you ignore the associated damage, you "just" take fractional damage (dunno the fraction though).

It would be even better removed. (Which I did in fact do, a couple of months ago.)
takkaria whispers something about options. -more-

That would make even more sense. I assume you are talking about the potion, not the ring. The potion never seemed very useful to begin with.

I see. I guess I was confused by the fact that when you have poison resistance, you can not be poisoned. But as you are now explaining, you still take a fraction of the damage from poison breath (gas?). I suppose that makes sense.

My biggest wonder in the game is also an effect, or lack of an effect. I understand the linguistics of calling it a potion of Slow Poison, but what I am waiting for a proper shriek from Wormtongue when I zap him with a wand of Cold Balls. If it were me, I'd be coughing up Boots of Speed at the first threat of a wand of Cold Balls.

well nowadays there isn't much need for that potion anyway

the effects of being poisoned are wearing off so quickly, unless it was something you ate or drank that I never bother any more with !salt water, !slow poison, or !neutralize poison.

But I do recall the days when if you did ignore those !'s and had no form of cures on you, ya could very easily lose a character to being poisoned. But nowadays within 2 actions most poison effects are gone unless they got piled up on ya.

Do potions provide nourishment? If so, removing some semi-useless potions might hurt ironmanning.

IMO restoring extended poison effects would be a better way of dealing with slow poison becoming irrelevant than removing the slow poison potion.

But it would have to include, renaming slow poison to something else!

Well I think sloe poison should be renamed Jägermeister.

I do kind of agree that poison effects are waaaaaay too short now... I remember the days when being poisoned made me sweat a little, especially at lower levels, when there still wasn't a reliable poison remover, other than potions. Now it's almost meaningless to be poisoned.

But yeah, !Slow Poison was never very useful, even back in the day.
