I'm about to start a new character and I'm looking for something difficult. Anyone got a suggestion?
Challenging Race Class Combos

Humans, elves, and half-elves are pretty weak compared to other races. Mages, priests, and rangers have comparatively weak starts.
Half-orc mages would probably also be pretty terrible -- almost as stupid as half-trolls, and they don't have regeneration to give them nigh-bottomless SP wells. -
Humans get levels *fast*. Because of importance of CON I would say elves and half-elves are the worst races for anything. Elves have penalty to STR and hit die too which makes them an ultimate challenge race. Combine that penalty with mage low hit-die and penalties to STR and CON you have real challenge combo: elf mage. Good luck getting CON high while still able to carry more than your clothes and spellbooks.Humans, elves, and half-elves are pretty weak compared to other races. But hobbits have WIS and CON bonuses which is further boosted by priest WIS and CON bonuses, and OoD is very effective low-cost spell thru entire game. You just need to survive to clvl 9 to get it and that point onward it is easy combo. After a while you get dispels and *destruction*. Priest offensive arsenal is not much weaker than mage, only major things missing are haste and banishments, and I think healing spells more than compensate the lack of really damaging offensive spells. Non-evil things are a bit more troublesome to priest than mage, but there are not many of those in the game.
Elf priest would be way worse.Comment

Yeah, honestly kobolds are probably too good. They're net +2 stats (ignoring the pointless -2 CHA modifier), they have innate +3 stealth (only one behind hobbits), and have generally good skills across the board. The d8 hit die isn't fantastic -- you're at -50 max HP on average compared to a d10. But you also get 50-foot infravision (tied with dwarves for best in game), and of course poison resistance is one of the best racial innates in the game.Comment
