    Advice for Priest

    I first started playing Angband seriously about a year ago, and made my way to dl50 or thereabouts before my warrior was killed by a mean pack of ascii characters (Balrog or one of his ilk). About a week ago I decided to try my luck as a priest. I am not sure about the best strategy, but I am essentially relying on orbs of draining and healing spells aplenty; so far I have been lucky and have - once again - delved to level 50. This time I'd like to avoid sudden death; any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Should I try to find a better melee weapon? Totila provides a speed boost, but doesn't inflict much damage. It didn't use to be a problem, but orbs of draining have become less effective as more and more monsters are immune.

    2. What resistances do I need to work on before delving deeper? Should I try to up my Con to get mor HPs?

    3. I think I have come across all spell books for mages (and sold them off for cash), but no luck whatsoever with the Holy Books. Are they normally found on deeper levels?

      FYI if you copy the text of your character dump and paste it in between CODE tags (# sign on the WYSIWYG editor thing when you post), it makes it a lot easier for people to view your character

          The priests main advantage is access to 0% fail on healing spells. So they can fight longer battles provided the opponents aren't doing more than 300 damage a round.

          Right now your weapon is pretty weak for damage output (because you haven't found enough dex potions yet). So you still are going to be relying on Orb of Draining for most of your damage output. Eventually though you'll get your melee up to about 250-300 damage a round and then you can just attrition everything to death.

            1. I would wield Totila just for the rConf - failing that, always have it or something with rConf in your inventory (and if it is not in your hands, have a guaranteed confusion curer stack in your inventory). If you are looking for a stronger weapon, see if you can find something of Extra Attacks - then look out for +dam boosts on rings, weapons and so on. (You will also eventually get a book that, with patience, can enchant anything to +15)

            2. Replace the ring of Con with the ring of Resist Poison - Or you will find yourself suddenly dead at the poisonous breath of a Drolem (like me). Other than that, until you have over 800 hp or move at over +20 speed, watch out for things that breathe an element you do not resist (breath max damage is 400). If you can do that, you don't strictly need any resistances beyond the first five. If at all possible, carry around potions/staves of speed so new, scary uniques can't double move you. Rely on ESP and judicious use of detecting monsters/evil.

            3. On my last priest run it took forever to find the last three books.

              To clarify, since I felt this was worded confusingly, different elements have different damage caps. All breath damage is the maximum of (relevant damage cap, 1/3rd monster's current HP), but the damage caps vary depending on the element. For the basic 4 elements the cap is 1600; for poison it is 800; it's 550 for nether (and some others?) and 400 for most of the rest of the resistable ones. I think the unresistable ones have caps around 300, but I'm not looking this up right now, so beyond the Nether cap these numbers may be inaccurate.

              Bottom line is, you should be aware of how much damage you're at risk of taking, and plan accordingly.

                The easiest way to find all of the priest spellbooks is to play a mage.

                  Haha - of course. Perhaps the nefarious Murphy should be cast as the final boss?

                  Murphy points at you and curses. Murphy summons the great Wyrm of Law. Everything goes wrong.
                  On a more serious note, thanks for the advice! I'll keep Totila for now and try to up my Con by other means.

                    try get urself all the books if u dont hav

                    use good spells alot

                    get good weapon and hit them also orb when u tele then hit them when u r healed and buff/protected

                      Yeah, I forgot the otherwise in 'breath max damage is 400 otherwise'. I also forgot nether is 550 max (is it really? ouch!). Thanks for the correction

                        Despite a few near-death experiences she's still alive and kicking! I have managed to up my base speed to 23 and am currently looking for Restore Mana and *healing*. Is it ok to descend to 50' and wait for the black market to restock or is that considered cheating?

                        At the moment I am lurking at dl60-69, and I am not sure if I should go deeper than that. What are my biggest weaknesses?

                          You are allowed to do anything in Angband except save scum, edit the game files, memory watch/edit the running process/hexedit/etc. Whether or not it is fun is your call -that's what Angband is about.

                          You seem to have pasted your dump twice minus the contents of your home. Do you still have the helmet with ESP? Put it on - it is much more convenient than needing to cast detection spells all the time. You can lug the helmet with disenchantment resistance in your backpack and put it on whenever you need it.

                          The gloves and boots are also potential swaps too (since you only need one source of free action).

                            Hell you are allowed to do all of those too. As long as you're honest, and don't start bragging about your low turncount save-scummed win. The whole point of making the edit files the way they are is so that people could change them to suit their liking.
