Often it's a good idea to check monster recall for a monster you know and the item inspect screen. You can then compare how your hit chances change with the pointy weapon and whether your damage output is actually better. Often I find that the blunt weapon is much better just on pure damage output.

I know this may have been covered before (so to quote a prolific poster "please no rage" lol) but in regards to the nightly builds,
how buch does using non-priest weapon effect combat?

Not much, -5 to hit IIRC. It does affect your spellcasting quite a lot though and that is much worse than combat penalty or mage SP penalty from wearing gloves.
