    thanks

This game is pretty epic too. Just cleared a cave of some 50 orcs and uruk. Yikes. A pair of rods of lightning helps

50 is not much. Just wait until you run into summoner that summons summoners . Then you have a epic battle.

Cavern-levels can be scary though. The layout makes them a quite a lot more dangerous than ordinary levels.

I still vote High-Elf Rogue as the easiest newbie character... high stealth means you don't wake up most of the dungeon when walking around, which makes life a LOT easier when you're first getting started, IMO

Holy smokes. Telepathy is awesome. And a little unnerving when you see just how many uruk are hiding in a room..

I guess you don't need anyone to tell you that Telepathy is one of the most useful powers in the game --- if you've got it, don't leave home without it!

What happens if I leave a level without killing a unique enemy on the map? Will I run into him again later, or is he/she/it gone ?

Do they level up or do they appear the way they are?

Also, just noticed something cool. If you look at the details for a monster ("look" and then hit r), if you haven't killed that monster yet with this character, it'll say "your ancestors have killed X".

                  Neat!

No, they don't level up, yes the recall window is very useful and has a lot of interesting lore on the type of unique your facing, rods of probing will reveal Hp of the monster, this game has a lot of handy features, it's cool to read a uniques history, I really enjoyed learning the names of the ring-wraiths, and their history.

I was actually really amazed when I started googling the names, and realised that most (all?) are actual characters from Tolkien

                      also argh... death by stupid.

Found a trap that filled the room with orcs. Barely fought them down. Instead of waiting til my health was totally recovered, I went to disarm the trap and voila... room full of black orcs. Dead 3 turns later, as I had burnt through my scrolls of phase door in the first fight.

I think the names of the ring-wraiths came from some board game actually. Tolkien never mentions any of them besides the witch-king and I think khamul. Tolkien might even say that their names have been forgotten, if my memory holds.

Still Ji Indur Dawndeath is a lot cooler than "Ringwraith #4"

ahh fair enough. I wonder if they may have come from the MERP roleplaying game. I've seen mention that the original guy(s) fleshed out the monsters using D&D and Rolemaster.

Though, rumor has it that not all monsters are detected by telepathy ...

                              Question number 203

Am I correct in assuming a ring of slaying is a bonus to hit attack and damage, whereas a ring of damage is only a bonus to damage?

Correct. Bonuses to damage are typically far more significant than bonuses to hit chance, though it's difficult to quantify.
