    where'd Morgoth go?

So I'm playing the ironman competition, I Word of Destruction on level 100, and now Morgoth is nowhere to be found. I can't climb the stairs, so what do I do? If I sit in a corner and rest, will he eventually re-spawn? And does this mean I need to use Earthquake instead?

He'll come back eventually, yeah. You'll just need to wait for him. Earthquake can still remove monsters, though I'm not certain if it can remove monsters that can eat walls (like Morgoth can). If you want to disrupt the terrain, do it when Morgoth isn't around.

Dang! Well, I wasn't in the race for 1st anyways, so what's a few more 100k turns. And Earthquake doesn't remove monsters, just potentially damages them.

It can remove them, but the odds are low. If you cast it repeatedly in a constrained vault then you'll eventually start deleting monsters. I think that it happens when the monster has no valid space to be ejected to.

(I used repeated Earthquakes to avoid having to encounter Ancalagon and his escorts while still being able to access the rest of the vault -- by the time I was done blocking him off, he'd disappeared along with half his buddies)

I've "lost" Morgoth in an Ironman game before too. I got him to respawn by deliberately setting off a summon monsters trap.

Sounds a bit buggy to me. Not letting Morgoth get booted off DL100 seems like a good situation for a special-case.

If you allow him to survive *destruction* effect, it will result in final fight being a lot easier.

In Hengband, if you destruct the final monster it simply gets teleported and healed back up to full hp. Believe me, this does not make things easier
