Level feelings, or "a not much interesting thread"

On DLVL 15, "you feel that there may not be much interesting here". Killed a bunch of Apprentices, and found Tenser's and rapier of *slay evil* with ESP.

I thought level feelings were now modified to include monster drops, or am I wrong? This is v3.3.0-205-gb3cebed, a git build from two weeks ago.

No, they're not - level feelings are only about floor items. So I suspect those were both monster drops.

Yes, indeed they are. Thanks for the explanation - probably I saw the change discussed here on the forum and I assumed it was included in the last nightlies.

(btw, I know, this character is doomed to die soon...)

Problem with that inclusion would be that you get a Superb feeling without anything special in the dungeon because some novice mage is carrying Ringil and The One Ring and then that novice mage gets trampled over by water elemental. You then would need to kill everything to find out what is causing that feeling and find nothing no matter how long you spend killing things (until something else gets spawned with excellent drop).

It would get worse if you play preserve off. IIRC items that are carried by monsters that get deleted before they drop their items are considered preserved even in preserve off, but you would still get the "special" feeling. That's just wrong.

That is why those do not count in the feelings. When you don't count items carried by monsters at the level creation it is pretty much same as it was before when they got their drop generated at the event of death.

This seems easy to fix: monsters carrying artifact cannot be trampled, or when they are, they drop the artifact or pass it on to the trampler. It wouldn't be too different from the special case "monsters cannot pick up artifacts" that is already there.

I see more problematic the strategy "should I kill Sméagol this time or leave him alive for later? Hmm, there are 'nothing but cobwebs' here, he can't be carrying anything good".

Didn't think of that way, but you are right that is even worse. Anyway right solution is to not to include items carried with monsters in level feelings.
