They're solid blocks - isn't that what you want? You can change the display char or the colour through the knowledge menu.
Gaps between blocks is caused by font selection/window resize. Try messing around a bit with different fonts and graphics selections. It should be quite easy to fix.

That's fine, it was just a pretty big visual change from the way I was used to seeing it, and like Timo said, the horizontal gaps between the blocks looked a little strange.
