Honestly I would like to see magical arms and armor removed from the shop, forcing the player to go down into the dungeon to find good magical weapons and armor, Imagine the excitement when you find a good weapon and didn't buy one from a shop Or enchant one up to +9+9.
And shouldn't the magicians, priests and smiths who run the shops be able to make some good equipment?
Also, it is exciting to find a good thing in a shop and spend a lot of money to buy it. It is a legitimate and enjoyable part of the game.
I agree that the shops should not be your main source of equipment, but at least you should find some kit there if you're not playing ironman.

I've always operated on the assumption that the shopkeepers are able to export their goods to the rest of the world. As has been suggested by others, the town is a boomtown -- adventurers show up to pay extortionate rates for basic supplies, endure horrific risks to find incredible wealth, and then sell that wealth for a fraction of its value, with the shopkeepers raking it in all the while thanks to a total lack of competition.Comment

The new versions of angband dosen't really concentrate on store selling and buying. A brand new game does not have really any magic items for sell other than basic stuff, at the begining. It feels to me that the store is mearly a starting point to collect those vital supplies at the begining. by the time some good armor and weapons show up, you generally don't need it anyway.
I agree that the black market should stock some good equipment, it is after all a black market, and to get them you are going to pay an extreemly high price for it.
There is always stuff to spend your money on, books, scrolls, staffs, rings and amulets, wands, to name a few.
By mid game and later, your already eqipped with artifacts, and don't need to buy new gear anyway, so that money is really unnessary.
At the start of the game characters can dive down all the way to level 10 easy right off the bat, and your going to find better stuff that way, I haven't bought hardly anything from the armor and weapons stores anyway, in the new versions, other than basic starting stuff.
I admit though that it could be more valuable to be able to buy good gear if you are playing a no artifact game.Comment

A minor issue, and a semi-major issue...
The minor issue; the folder name in the extracted tree still says "3.2.0"
The more major issue... it doesn't run correctly for me; I get the opening window with no text, a blank black window. If I go the the file menu (the menu bar seems fine) and select "new", I get a hollow cursor on the left a third of the way down the window, give or take, but nothing readable. Font issue of some sort maybe? This is Windows-7 SP1.Comment

Which font are you trying to use? I have seen this before, and I had to try opening different font files till I found one that shows text, you can enlarge the window by dragging the corners to make it bigger. I disable the win-pref files in my games, but don't know if that would help you.
Buzzkill has a larger font file on his website you might be able to try.Comment

Thanks for the report about not starting on Win7 - please can any other Windows users relate their experiences with this 3.3.1 RC?"Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

I just downloaded the 19th September (d1e9d87) RC - seems to work fine on my computer, also running Windows 7 SP1 (mine's the 64-bit version if that's relevant).Comment

I have Vista, and have no problems in last version, or newest version. I rename my pref-font-win file to pref-font-winx though to disable it.Comment

This appears to be something funky with my machine, specifically. I re-unpacked the distributions for both this RC and for the main 3.3.0 release (not into a Dropbox folder this time) and now they are both showing this no-text-displayed behavior. I'll bet restarting Windows will fix it - though that's not a terribly satisfying troubleshooting approach.Comment
