    maybe scale damage from pits with weight (+make it more harmful in general)? so early chars can survive falling into a pit, but to a warrior carrying plate mail and tons of different weapons it could still be an issue? well, guess it won't work to find the balance between it being barely a nuisance and creating really annoying instadeaths, but i thought i might as well throw in the idea... and it could maybe make FF at least slightly useful...

      This sounds kinda cool. You could take extra damage, suffer cuts, loss of consumables due to breakage, and even stunning/paralysis from being buried under the weight of your inventory. Acid filled pits might not be terrible. Nexus pits anyone? Maybe 'bottomless pits' or 'gravity pits' that would be very difficult to escape from without the aid of some form of teleportation.

        While we're at it, pits could break fragile items in your inventory (i.e. potions).
