Feature request: List known monsters by native depth

It could be useful to have this feature in the monster knowledge menu to prepare for what is ahead. What do you think?

edit: I mean that in the monster knowledge menu there should be a list of dungeon depths (or levels). If you select one of these depths, a list of all known monsters with the corresponding native depth should appear. Hope this makes it clearer what I am trying to say...

Of course, to a certain extend, good old pen & paper could do the job too (like "DL 53: cold, acid and slowing attacks, summoners. DL 54: Here, there be dragons." or whatever), but an in-game solution would be more convenient imo. /edit

Nice idea - feel free to open a change ticket for it. <schadenfreude>ISTR myshkin aspired to make some improvements to the knowledge menus</schadenfreude>.

Are you referring to the list accessible via ~ or the list in the monster list subwindow? (The latter is the same as the list that [ displays.) Actually, my impression was that both were sorted by level.

I mean the list accessible via ~ ; the latter I didn't even know about ^^

I only took a quick glance at Vanilla Angband to make sure this feature has not been implemented yet, so I'm not sure whether they're listet by native depth already. Anyway, my suggestion is that you select a dungeon depth (as opposed to a monster category) and then a list of all known monsters with the corresponding native depth appears. Should be easier than checking the respective monster categories one by one.

So there is no need to write a change ticket anymore? I'm asking because I have no account for the bug tracker.

Ah, I misunderstood. Vanilla does not have that feature. The monsters in the per-race lists are sorted by depth, but there is no per-depth list. I think the code to create such a list would be quite easy, but I have less sense of how to fit it into the existing UI.

There should be a change ticket for this. At this point, I'm not committing to adding it...do other people think this would be a useful feature? Any suggestions for improving the monster knowledge UI?

I'd only signed up for merging the object knowledge and squelch menus.

actually, I'd propose a small (and probably easier suggestion) that allows you to cycle through the monster list in either direction. Often I want info on a monster and I have to cycle through all the monsters, and then I miss the one I want and have to cycle through them all again.

Can't you already do that? Which of the monster lists are you talking about? At least knowledge-menu list cycles in both directions.

How about the monster knowledge lists containing "Native Depth" (in addition to the current "Name", "Sym" and "Kills")? I suppose it should be easy to integrate this into the current interface. Still, additionally I'd like to have separate per-depth lists...

Here is a thread that I started awhile back, with the idea of being able to look ahead to the next level or two and see what monster attacks you needed to prepare for to help you decide if you wanted to go down another level. It might fill the OP's request if implemented.
