I do like NPP's chest system, which, as far as I can tell, basically has a bunch of item pools that chests can pull from, e.g. nothing but cash, nothing but stat potions, nothing but gauntlets, nothing but dungeon spellbooks. It's probably too good as it stands to just drop into V, but a similar implementation would make chests more interesting than "just another random drop", and it wouldn't be unreasonable to have a drop pool that gave you mushrooms of Vigor.

As a quick-and-dirty alternative, make the mushrooms appear much deeper, so the player is encouraged to hang out on deep levels to find such mushrooms. Finding one of these is the same as finding six of the old stat-restore potions all together along with 5 free turns to safely drink them (assuming you had one turn to safely eat the mushroom).

They're one of the best items in the game that is native to their current depth.

Only if you are in equal need of all six stat restores at the time you eat the thing, which would require precisely balancing the amount of drain with the valuation the character assigns to that class.

For similar reasons, potions of Augmentation definitely should not cost 6x the price of one normal stat gain potion. Which they do, right now.

Realistically, Vigor is for the following situations:

        * Crap, I just got clipped by some Time Hounds and now all my major stats are down a bit.
        * Those Dreads nuked the hell out of my Strength, I'm nowhere near level up, and I don't see any potions of Strength.
        * I'm meleeing Morgoth even though I haven't found a good source of stat sustains.

With the new stat-restore on levelup mechanic, they are also useful if you get drained by something in the upper character levels shortly after levelling up, where it will take a long time to get that restored.

And since all of those situations occur later and deeper in the game, that's when mushrooms should start showing up.
