No, it doesn't matter at all. Ideally I want a mix of really old savefiles (which were last played in 3.2.0) and brand new savefiles (created in 3.2.0).

Well in that case, here is a savefile created in 3.2 (downloaded just now). Played until clvl 2 and dlvl 2 :-)

The canonical (encouraged by Apple) location for programs to save user-specific information is in /Users/YourUserName/Library, which is where OSX Angband savefiles are stored. So Angband's just following the recommended guidelines.

Sorry to be be picky, but the correct location is $HOME/Library. $HOME need not be /Users/YourUserName. For me it isn't.
