    What to grab

What should I be picking up in dungeons? I've been grabbing all the ego weapons and selling them, but I'm trying to get off of that because I have to go up so much.

If you don't want to do that, sitck to gathering things you think you might actually use :

    Artifacts
Things that cover resist holes/missing abilities (ESP, more speed, detect treasure, etc)
    Healing potions
Mana restore potions (when playing a Mages and Priests primarily).
    No-Fail escapes
Stat potions (at least until you have your stats maxed)
Wands/Staves with offensive capabilites are nice to grab and then use up.

One way to break the 'lug egos back to sell' habit is to play no-selling. I personally don't care for it, but it seems that most who do try it like it. Only go back up when you need something from the stores, or to drop off piles of 'I'll use it later' potions.

I'll second trying no-selling, as someone who does enjoy it myself. Otherwise, these items should be saved:

Potions of Healing, *Healing*, and Life
Potions of Speed (if you can't cast the spell, carry a couple until you find a Staff of Speed, but the rest should be saved unless you're a mage)
      Potions of Restore Mana
Scrolls of *Destruction* (carry one as a last-ditch guaranteed escape; save the rest at home)
      Scrolls of Mass Banishment
Scrolls of Teleport Level (carry as an escape)
Scrolls of Teleportation (carry once you get blindness/confusion resistance, unless you are a mage or priest since they get 0% failure rates on the equivalent spell)
      Mushrooms of Vigor

Also, if you have room and aren't an arcane caster, consider saving a spot for Potions of Berserk Strength. The extra to-hit can be helpful against big targets; ideally you'll have Heroism, Berserk, and Bless all running at the same time when you fight Morgoth.
