Actually, the original borg, autorogue, was something to behold. It played about as well as the very best players, and that is saying something. I never made it past dl 20 in rogue.

I'm pretty sure that when borg does stair-scumming it has lost his recall scrolls and is doing that to get to the town as quickly as it can.

I don't think the borg is programmed to recognize the difference between cheesy tactics and the regular kind. You can make an argument that stair scumming isn't cheesy, but you can't really cite the borg as an expert witness.
