    Kelek's Grimoire of Power

Quick couple questions about the spell books. Pretty new to Angband so sorry if these are newbie questions.

First, do different books have different drop rates? Im past dungeon level 60 and I think ive found at least 10 of each book type except I still havent even found one of Kelek's. I even found 4 Raal's on one level just earlier today, but no Kelek's, not even in the black market.

Also, is there a dungeon level I shouldnt go past until I get it? I can imagine that being able to mass banish against summoning uniques and banishing annoying monster types would be extremely useful, not to mention having the strongest spells in the game. Should I just keep diving and hope for the best?

    Thanks in advance

That's just bad luck I suppose. Kelek's shouldn't be rarer than Raal's, but the RNG may have its fun pretending so.

      Depth of Kelek's

Kelek's is found at a deeper depth than the other mage spell books; its depth range starts at 4000', while the other books start from between 2000' (Resistances) and 3500' (Tenser's). Raal's depth range starts from 2500', which is why you've found so many of them.

If you're willing to read spoilers, all this can be found here.

Kelek's is dlvl 80 item, so at dlvl 60 it needs to pass 20 level OoD check. Tenser is also dlvl 70 item, so it too needs to pass OoD check to be generated but it is a lot more probable to be generated in LV at dlvl 60 (usual diagonal LV is full of 7 level OoD places).

That's right, but Raal's Level 100, so getting four of that instead of even one Kelek's is still bad luck. (And Raal's is rarity 4, Kelek's only 1)

          *looking up*
Kelek's was 60 - or has that been changed?

          Tenser's is 80.

            Form 3.2.0 object.txt:

            N:469:[Raal's Tome of Destruction]
            G:?:r
            I:90:5:0
            W:50:0:30:20000
            A:30:50 to 100

            N:472:[Kelek's Grimoire of Power]
            G:?:r
            I:90:8:0
            W:80:0:30:90000
            A:20:80 to 100

So Raal's is dlvl 50 item, and Kelek's dlvl 80 item, rarities 30 and 20 respectively. A:-line is important one.

Mondkalb: Raal's used to be the rarest spellbook in the game, but that got changed awhile back, and a good thing too. It helps keep the mage able to play as a pure-mage with attack magic instead of having to switch to archery for awhile simply because the only attack spells available are the same ones he's been using since level 10. Mind, the most powerful spells in Raal's were moved to Kelek's at that time, too, and new spells were invented to take their place.

I wasn't scumming and found Kelek's on the floor at DL11 yesterday (3.2.0).

Too bad I was playing a warrior.

For that matter, I was playing the nightlies last week and found Kelek's...I forget where, but it was before 500'. A pity I was not only playing a warrior, but had selling off. Just so much worthless dross.

                        Needs some update, oviously.

But were you a mage/ranger? This is exactly the sort of thing that would happen with a priest/warrior/paladin etc.
If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then why are beholders so freaking ugly?
