hi there, yet more newb questions...

if i have a 'best' strength of 18 and then a little to the right it says 15, does that mean i've been afflicted some how? how do i cure that?

i've also had a -2 and -1 slow before. is there any way to find out what causes this or cure it?

When the stat is yellow it means that it has been reduced - some monsters can do that or some mushrooms and potions if consumed.
You can buy restore "stat" potions in the alchemy shop (randomly changing, not always available). You can also find these potions and mushrooms of restore "stat" in the dungeon or buy it at the black market.

The -1 or -2 speed means that you are encumbered with too much stuff (=weight) carrying around.

At early levels, the easiest way is in the alchemy shop in the town, there are often 'potions of restore strength'. They don't always show up though, just keep checking back.

The slowness is caused by carrying too much stuff around. Drop unnecessary things from the inventory to get rid of it. Running around in the dungeon while slowed is a major character killer.

thanks. the shop didn't have any, but i thought it might've been that.

what's the number of turns for shop stock turnover?

also is itb just me or is the light spell useless? i can only learn it when i'm in light and then it doesn't follow you like a lamp. i guess i have to keep my lamp.

The light/illumination spell/scroll/staff/rod/item is needed deeper in the dungeon to light up rooms. Most of them are dark.

The shops get new items every thousand turns (normal speed) and on night/day change. You have to wait or spend them in the dungeon. The shops don't restock if you are in town.
