It occurs to me that a lot of the really "awful" creatures in Angband are what I would consider to be Core creatures anyways -Elemental Hounds, most of the Uniques, Jellies and Molds.
I think that being able to customize the feel of the game more, to individual taste, would improve enjoyment.
Actually... here's another thought.
What if you had the option to change the "core" quest? If you set the "core" as Lovecraft, maybe instead of killing Morgoth, you had to kill Cthulhu? I guess the problem with that concept is figuring out the "stair drop" Boss. For example, if I'm playing Belgariad as my "core" theme, Torak would be the final boss, and the stairs should be dropped by Zedar the Apostate... but if I still have the Tolkien set, what happens if I kill Sauron? Is Morgoth still around down on 100? Hanging out with Torak and Cthulhu?
...so, maybe not that great a thought, after all.
