I don't remember Maggot dropping anything extraordinary, but Battle-scarred Vet once drop dagger HA (1d4) (+10, +15) (+4) once (don't remember those to_hit and to_dam very well, they might have been higher) at my second trip to town. Playing Priest. Lightweight blessed +4 to WIS high damage weapon was exactly the best possible weapon I could have got at that point.
I also got lucky not selling that. I picked it up, and was heading to weapon store thinking that it's not worth using ID to it and just few steps before entering the store pseudo kicks in and tells me that it is {good} and as such worth ID before selling. Obviously didn't sell.
Awesome. RNG got me though, was 1 step from stairway with 5 ethereal hounds peeping into room. Figured not all of them would breathe, so took a step. But exactly all 5 did and that was the end.
I once got a leather cap with ESP from Maggot.
Was quite useful for a few levels. Then got Thranduil.

In current incarnation of vanilla angband that would be real game changer for warriors, paladins and priests. Easy cruising to and beyond stat-gain depths.
Frog-knows definitely had much more variety in drops, and possibly in monster placement as well. I remember getting Ulmo from a player ghost in the 500' range once, which was a major game-changer. These days it's nearly as rare as Ringil. :\
Sure it does, if only for resale value. Spellbooks are some of the best salable goods in the game, especially since they stack so nicely.
Long live no_selling.
I've had red DSM from Maggot, which had coolness value but wasn't actually very useful - it was a heavy armour of rFire with a very long activation recharge.
I had a plain old longbow of extra might (+1) (+15,+15) or thereabouts - that was a much more awesome drop.

With the competition 97 characer, I just got a Lucerne Hammer (Defender) off Maggot before entering the dungeon. Sells for 21k gold. Will reroll in the interest of fairness.
