˝Troll Warrior clvl 36, Huge dLevel 45 Vault with Khamul, the Black Easterling

    Hi guys,

I just found a huge Vault on dLevel 45 guarded by Khamul, the Black Easterling (normally on dLevel 77) filled with Demilich, Death mold, Rotting & Demonic quylthug, Nalfeshnee, an 11 headed hydra, Anclient multi-hued dragon (x2), Glabrezu (x2) and less frightening stuff.

Khamul moves around to be close to where I am. I can hardly kill him off with at this stage, can I?. Destruction is available but I need the 3x Slime Molds some 10 paces inside the lower entrance since I forgot to to pick up the food after having gone through a huge pile of stuff on the previous level. &% stupid of me.

    >> Ideas?

    /Mathias .aka. Bugblatter

Attached ZIP-file contains a PDF with screen shots of the vault with monsters as well as loot and loot list. Lot’s and lot’s of both. The lower entrance was not yet visible then but is in middle of bottom wall.

First things first: it's better to flee than to die.

Second, remember that any time you use any kind of teleportation when standing inside a vault, you'll be taken outside of the vault. So Phase Door is just as good as Teleport...though I note you don't have any. You should be carrying at least 20 Phase Door scrolls with you all the time; they're often useful tactically (e.g. when you want to stay away from melee range, or if you need to create some distance so you can chug healing potions).

For the vault, I'd recommend either avoiding it, or destructing it. Grab as much loot as you can before food makes you return to the surface, and next time remember to have food with you! Also, if you had it, Teleport Other would allow you to remove monsters from the vault without blowing the vault itself up -- though it'd also make teleporting about the level much more dangerous. Still, Teleport Other should be a standard part of your kit.

For your character, your CON is woefully low. Boost that up ASAP. CON = hitpoints = less dying.

Also remember that most cure potions will give you a little nutrition if you start getting hungry but don't want to leave yet.

For food, check BM. Elven Waybread is way better than ordinary food or even satisfy hunger scrolls (very light, better nutrition, heals a little, is not vulnerable to elements) and later you will find enough in dungeon that you don't need to buy it from town.

Isn't there a way to post screen dumps in oook? That pdf has poor quality, I can't tell if there is anything worth protecting.

Also I would use Thalkettoth instead of Arvedui and that amulet of regen does nothing to you (H-Troll has natural regen). From low-level amulets Amulet of slow digestion would help you more and infravision a lot more.

As Derakon says your CON is low, so get a good Ring of CON and use it instead of that Acid-ring (no point using RoCON if it doesn't give you benefit though).

I have never seen enough elven waybread in the dungeon...It's about as rare as food is.

There's plenty of it. I have done ironman warriors with only elven waybread as food after a few first levels of the game. At least before drop decrease and after Ewert change in rarities. I had more than enough of it. In fact I needed to throw some away. Normal food isn't that rare either. You just need to kill orcs, novice rangers and basically any normal-quality item only group monsters to get those.

Of course H-Troll is a bad class for food consumption because of innate regen, but I think you can still find more than enough in dungeon only. It has better nutrition value than food rations so you don't need that many. BM also sells it time to time in stacks. Note that it doesn't start to appear until you have dived a bit, early levels just don't have those.

I agree max size on dumps is low but with so much black in them, screenshots compress well. Zoom in on the pdf and be surprised. It's as detailed as you could ever ask for.

I mean that I have a vague memory that oook accepts screen dumps (in game command) directly without any need to convert them to anything. You get way better quality with those.

Also pdf is a bad format for picture anyway. Make it a png if you make a picture. Lossless tight packaging free standard for pictures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Network_Graphics

                    Much cleaner pictures.

                      After action report

I went to outside of NE corner of vault. *Destruction* took care of Khamul who had followed me on the inside. Cleaned out the vault step by step after that. Had to teleport a few times (phase door would have been much cheaper, will start carrying those again) but I did ok. Food did not become an issue since I found more than I needed once inside.

It was well worth fighting for, never seen so much good loot in one place before. Now I have better stats, ESP and a much better crossbow. Don't know about Isildur though. Is the AC improvement .vs. Thalkettoth worth it? Already have rConf.

                      LOOT:

                      Stat gain:
                      - 1x str
                      - 1x int
                      - 2x wis
                      - 1x con
                      - 3x chr

                      Artifacts:
                      - The Full Plate Armour of Isildur [26,+25] (+1)
                      - The Hard Leather Cap of Thranduil [2] {special}
                      - The Metal Cap of Thengel [3] {special}
                      - The Beaked Axe of Theoden (2d6) (+8,+10) (+3)
                      - The Flail 'Totila' (3d6) (+16,+12) (+2 stealth)

                      Great ego:
                      - a Heavy Crossbow of Extra Might (x5) (+18,+20) (+1)

                      /Mathias

As a general rule, ignore AC. Other abilities tend to be far more important. If you have a truly terrible AC then getting more can be worth jettisoning minor abilities or unneeded stat boosts (e.g. WIS for a warrior), but it's practically never worth worrying about. I can't remember the last time I made an equipment decision based on AC (past the early game anyway).

Isildur gives RSound and RNexus as well as RConf, so it's extremely valuable armor. Still +3 DEX/Speed is too good to pass up well into the midgame.

Hint: don't throw this away even that it is useless now. RConf from headgear is surprisingly useful later. Holhenneth and Crown of Gondor obsolete this, but as long as you can't be sure you have rConf from other sources in every possible scenario this is a keep.

Something like this: RoP + Thalkettoth + Thorin + Amulet of Trickery + Amrod = everything you need except rConf.
