Understanding 'Shoot' values in Character Screen

    Hello all,

I did a search on the forums for this topic, but couldn't find a clear reference to my question. I hope my search skills haven't failed me and this hasn't been asked before.

I'm curious as to the meaning of the 'Shoot' entry in the Character Screen, since it doesn't seem to add up to the equipment I'm carrying.

    Currently it reads:
    Code:
    Fight (+3, +3)
    Shoot (+4, +4)
But I'm wearing the following equipment:
    Code:
    a Short Bow (x2) (+1, +4)
    37 Arrows (1d4) (+0, +0)
According to my own apparently flawed interpretation, Shoot should read (+4, +7). The missile average damage is correctly calculated from what I can see with the 'I' command. So this doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm just curious as to how that entry in the Character Screen is calculated.

Your "fight" is what you have in melee without any other bonus calculated. Any non-shooter to_dam bonuses do not affect shooting, but you do however get all to_hit bonuses (minus melee weapon) in shooting.

So you get +4 to to_dam from your Short Bow and +1 from bow + +3 from fighting to to_hit.

Note that arrow 1d4 has average of 2.5 (1,2,3,4, not 0,1,2,3,4) multiplied by two (multiplier) = 5, so average damage should be +9

Average damage from the arrows ('I' command) is actually being displayed as 13. Which is what I would expect from this bow:

      ((1 + 4) / 2 + 4) x 2 = 13

Thank you for the explanation, Timo. I was convinced the damage from Fight was also added to Shoot. And to aggravate that, the math I was doing on my head was wrong.

The math I did was also wrong. Forgot to double the +4. Back to school I guess...
