Also, regarding the halving of the detection distances to fit the smaller screen... I think that is a good idea, but we should keep in mind that the result would not be vanilla. This does not really matter, honestly, but I just wanted to point that out.
An option could be to display a list of off-screen monsters. Simply displaying the complete list of visible monsters would not work, since the list would not fit the screen, especially lower in the dungeon. Displaying only the off-screen monsters would help the player notice that drolem at the far end of that corridor.
