    Randomized monster speeds?

I just died to a hippogriff -- I was running away from it, and I'm almost positive that I was moving at normal speed (that is, I'm pretty certain I would have noticed if I were burdened, but I didn't actually check). But every 10 turns it got to move and attack. Is monster speed randomized at all? Or is there some other circumstance that could have caused this beyond me just being at -1 speed and not noticing? Which I really rather doubt.

Yes, non-unique monsters can have a random +/- 1 or 2 to their base speed, which means they can get double moves occasionally (or you can).

IIRC that variability depends of the depth of the monster. +/-3 is the max I believe.
