    Cambeleg x Randarts

    Hi,

Cambeleg is one of the few gloves a mage/ranger can use without casting penalties (among all gloves/gauntlets of agility, as far as I know).

If I play with randarts, what will happen? Will I ever find glove artifacts suitable for a mage or ranger?

I had the same question, and my randart ranger just found some awesome randart gloves that have (among other things) some +DEX which allows wearing without penalty.

I don't know if there is a piece of code that forces there to always be at least one usable glove though.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing forced. However, gloves are favored to have +Dex and Free Action so the probability of having no gloves with either of those attributes is pretty small.

I always play with randarts and I can always find something to wear if I make it to the end game. An endgame rangers won't be relying on magic and can take the hit to mana. I did in this game and it turned out fine.

Hey Miyazaki, sorry for the digression, but what's your advice on using a ranger to kill M? Sauron was cake, but M is proving to be tough for me. I am just not finding enough uber arrows of slay evil etc. to make it easy...

I have never had an easy fight with Morgoth, even when I had arrows of holy might that did 700+ damage.

Use what you got. I usually carry two launchers so I can use arrows and bolts. With the new quiver, you can carry tonnes of ammo and you can use seeker arrows if they does 200 hp of damage (x3 shots per turn). You don't need uber-ammo if you take your time.

(Remember that M's mana storms will destroy all the ammo on the floor, so if you want to re-collect off the ground, don't fire at him if he is within 3 squares of you.)

My technique for killing Morgoth is not that original: use his strengths against him. I always fight in a destructed area. It breaks up his lie of sight and gives chances to heal while he is approaching. Blink-heal-attack-repeat. When M summons uniques, I don't WoD them. I just teleport to another part of the dungeon and let M come to me.

It seems like whenever I destruct the area and he moves within LoS, he's only about 2 or 3 spaces away. I think I'm not doing enough damage because when he chases me after I teleport he regens a lot of life (more than I can deal). I haven't found a decent randart launcher yet, so maybe that's the missing link. I'll give it another shot and be more patient.

Woot thanks for the advice! I beat Morgoth after a lengthly and very slow fight.

This randart game didn't really give me many good artifacts. I guess that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

                Except this one:

                Code:
                The Elfstone 'Andoldor'
                -----------------------
                +1 tunneling.
                Provides immunity to acid, cold.
                Provides resistance to light, confusion.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
                Sustains dexterity.
                Slows your metabolism.

When activated, it heals you a large amount (1/4 of your wounds, minimum 3

There is indeed nothing in the randart code to ensure that at least one pair of gloves is mage-friendly (+DEX or FA or alchemist's gloves as base item). However, in all the several hundred sets of randarts I have generated, I have never noticed one without any such gloves. I wasn't looking that hard, mind, but I suspect the probability is very low indeed. Anyone who generates a randart spoiler file without any mage-friendly gloves should definitely post it here, and I will then amend the code to ensure that it never happens again.

Eh, I just beat Morgoth with a ranger with a long bow of power. Artifacts in certain slots definitely aren't needed to win, they just sometimes make it easier. Gloves of Agility or some ego alchemist gloves would probably be enough.

That was a pretty wussy bow, actually. It was a well-deserved victory. There are documented no artifact wins, so we know that artifacts aren't essential. But a nice randart can totally change the game!

On the topic of randarts, how are the min/max levels for artifacts (viewable in the spoilers) used?

You might have killed M faster by using that nice Zweihander after the good arrows ran out. I'd say it's this uncertainity of good items for your important slots that makes randarts interesting.

That's exactly what I did. Since I didn't have a good artifact launcher, I spent the 2nd half of the fight melee'ing. I was using it as an example that missing key artifact slots just makes you change your tactics instead of ruining the game.
