Hobbit Rogue - possible Winner or just a worthless try

So - my HE Rogue just died (underestimated a paladin), i downloaded the trunk (r1948) and compiled it.
So i made up a new Hobbit rogue and it is a lucky one (until now). Here is the dump: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=9942
Could kill Grip only with oils and one hit. Sure i need to get a sling soon because of those nice Pebbles. Sadly the only one in the weapon store and is too expensive because its 3+,+3. Will finish my shopping now and go down again.

Yup. Flasks of oil will do for the first few levels, at which point you start finding wands on the floor, and can sell the crappy ones (scare monster etc.) for enough gp to buy a longbow or ltxbow.

Actually im not a good diver and havent planned to dive. But this is more since i have almost no experience with Hobbits in Angband. So im careful at the moment, especially since i lost around 10 or more chars pretty quick.
The oil throwing is great - somehow more useful than !CLW. But a good lxbow is essential - must get more money soon which means i have to dive deeper. Damn devils circles

This thread actually inspired me to make a hobbit rogue for kicks since my priest died due to me being stupid (held right on the keyboard to kill a troll pit, bats of gorgoth came in... yeah you can figure what happened next.)

Anyway, got a ltxbow early with some +something +3 bolts and got the xbow to +3 damage. That did me well till I found a longbow which I used despite the damage drop because of weight issues. It still isn't as good, but I have arrows of venom which are my current dangerous baddie killer.

Also lucky enough to find a rod of cold balls early, and now wands of lightning and fire bolts (dropped frost when I cracked a vault at dlvl 20something).

The ring of speed +4 from that vault hasn't hurt either, and I sold a maul of westernesse I found so I could by elvenkind armor from the shop which had rpoison.

But damn, this has really taught me to not ignore wands and such, they have been literal life savers, and the source of nearly all my damage.

Hm, sounds nice. I wish there was some training session - i dont think i will ever make progress this quick. Have another hobbit-rogue running (couple of OSes here) and made it to lvl 5, just a sling +0+0 and no ammo (found it while diving). Got a dagger +3+4 which is nice. Oh, and some stupid rogue took all my gold (wasnt too much but i think that job ethics should forbid them stealing from other rogues :P ).
But this forum helped me again getting an idea on how to play.

I started playing Hobbit rogues as well. Last night I got one around 3500' a depth I don't see very often. Took one too many chances and died when a _Tele failed. Now I know to take Night mares much more seriously. He had some good kit too, a Robe of Elvenkind the artifact scimitar with 3 blows and a +1 shots +10 longbow.

Found sting, which is baby Ringil, my fate is about sealed, I keep finding nexus hounds so thats. An omen to a stat scrambling screwed character...

my first and only win was with a hobbit mage[1] so a hobbit rogue should be doable. currently having a good time with a half troll rogue.. he's basically a warrior with built in detect, ID and satisfy hunger...

[1] got him down to dlvl 74 on a really old version on my amiga. changed computers and then about 2 years later, refound him as a live character, moved im to my PC and loaded him up into 2.9 and carried on from there. a little scary for a while as I lost my res poison in the game version change and I had less than 700hp when I won, never mind when I found him. played veerrryyy slloowwly for a while..
