Savefile woes following crash

I admit it- I was attempting to prevent my character from
dying. I was in desperate straits and I powered off my
machine without exiting angband in the hope that it wouldn't
save the recent mistakes I had made in the fight.
Now, when I start up, I get the error:
Error (Cannot read savefile) reading 102.86.128 savefile.

Have I paid the price? Is there a way to recover?
