The cluestick would be for taking away the ability to read scrolls. Its pretty stupid since you can still cast spells ... from a book. And a great recipe for instakills.

So, you are proposing to make it impossible to cast spells from a book as well? It's harsh, but it might be interesting, although it seems really hard on full casters.

As for instakills, I've never been close to death from amnesia.

I too, have always been amused by the 'You can't remember how to read' message. Probably it needs to be spoken aloud in the sound directory too

Beholders and other high-level 'e'
Saruman
Adunaphel
High level lich
Phantom
Mind flayer

because of amnesia?
Yes, I've lost characters (usually mages) to some of them, but it wasn't because I couldn't read scrolls.

It happens instantly. You may not see it coming. You may not even know that it has happened. Amnesia only compounds the problem .

Well, the comp char died to a nice combo of hound gravity attack and amnesia. Mind flayers have become Uber White Icky Things.
