    rings for temporary resistance?

My level-forty-something human warrior (Angband 3.1.1) ran into Uriel, Angel of Fire, yesterday, and had he not found a potion of resist heat just three squares before the encounter, his deeds of daring would have come to a sure and smoking end. As it was, Uriel is now just another line in my character's history. That got me thinking about the value of temporary resistance.

How do people feel about using rings of acid, flames, ice, and lightning for temporary resistance to the low elements? One advantage: ring resistance lasts longer than potion resistance. And there are no potions of resist acid or resist lightning.

    Thanks.

IMO potions are better for fire and cold, which are usually the ones you really need double resist for. You can buy them at the Alchemist, so it is easy to stock up 7-8 of them.

With the ring you would need to swap, and you have no recourse if the battle lasts longer than the activation. With the potion you can always drink another.

From looking at dumps, I know that some (good!) players do this with certain classes, so it's not out of the question. It should be even more useful in the current V, where elemental rings brand your attacks (if I'm not mistaken).

But I think it's best to carry them if you have an inventory-light style of play that doesn't involve too much treasure-hauling, because otherwise those rings are going to be the first things you drop.

Can anyone confirm that elemental rings brand your weapons? I'm very interested to know.

Breathers usually resist the element they breathe, so if you are wearing a ring for the resist, the brand is useless.

(and, no, by all means, I am not suggesting here to add a new ego/artifact such as "the ring of the storms", brands your attack with cold and lightning, activates for restistance to cold and lightning. How could one possibly think that? )

In my current, very promising game, I used rings of fire and lightning to take down a few elemental-themed uniques, and now Colluin serves the same purpose. For me, the inconvenience of swapping in a ring and swapping it right back out is outweighed by not having to worry about keeping yet another consumable in stock... besides, there are no potions of resist lightning or acid.
