One of my reasons to choose O as the base for my variant was the terrain, which seemed right - a few more types than V, but carefully thought out and used sparingly. I tend to find the sheer quantity of types in Un/NPP and ToME a bit overwhelming.
The water in wilderness areas is fantastic - when I'm on one side of a body of water and monsters are on the other side, working their way around it, I feel like Rooster Cogburn with a gatling gun firing my longbow!
Maybe terrain is not such a good idea for V but color in the dungeon would surely break the monotony. I recently played 3.1.2 and the orange/brown perma walls were a breath of fresh air in the otherwise dull dungeon.
