    Most current version?

I have been playing the most current v. available from the download page (r1626). But I keep seeing references to things being made that are not available in that version ( i.e. quivers ). I have been unsuccessful using the steps outlined in the stickk for getting the constant updates. I was wondering if anyone had a zip of it available they would be willing to send me.

    Thanks in advance.

You can download the Windows zip file on this page: http://rephial.org/nightlies/

Or here's the direct link to the current development version: http://rephial.org/nightlies/angband-r1887.zip

I wonder if the download bubble on the rephial.org home page shouldn't have a direct link to the nightlies page.

      THanks for the link.

What exactly does "development version" mean?

The development version contains all the new features and bug fixes added to the Vanilla Angband codebase since the last proper release. It is (more) likely to have bugs, broken mechanics, and poorly balanced systems, but probably also has the most exciting changes and interface improvements.

My take on this: the "dev" version (a.k.a "nightlies", "trunk" or "HEAD") is the version that will form the next released version. So -

              - if a new version has recently been released (as will be the case in a few short weeks), then the dev version could be wildly unbalanced and buggy, as brand new changes are being worked on well in advance of the next version. Playing nightlies straight after a release is asking for trouble.

              - if a new version is imminent (as is the case now), the dev version should be pretty stable, as it should look pretty much like the next version. There may well be a few last-minute tweaks before release, but no major changes or new mechanics.

In between those two extremes the dev version may well be buggy and/or unbalanced, but might also be in a bit of a lull, and quite playable.

                nightlies are awful

I can't play the old versions without the new features the newest nightlies spoil me with, but can't play the new versions because they're incredibly buggy and crash often and thus ruin fun/excitement. It's hard to be immersed and addicted to a game that crashes everytime you run along a path that happens to lead to the bottom edge of the map. Oops!

Try playing on an OS other than Windows. Nightlies rarely contain major bugs for long.
