Reply to movement speed thread (Understanding Movement Speed)

These forums are very buggy: my reply crashed the Movement Speed thread on my computer. So I am trying to post my reply here:

Extra moves is a bit broken in that it stacks as a separate kind of speed on top of regular speed. If you have 30 speed in Angband you will be equal to Morgoth. If you add +10 speed up to 40 speed you will be *slightly* faster than Morgoth since speed stops increasing linearly above +28 speed. However if you add +1 movement speed when you have +30 speed, it's not the same as adding +10 speed in the form of movement speed. Instead, it *doubles* your movement speed, and thus is completely non-affected by the diminishing return of regular speed beyond +28 speed. So you while you are moving about the dungeon with +30 speed and +1 speed you will be moving twice as fast as Morgoth, not *slightly* faster than him.

In other words +1 momvement speed doubles your speed rather than adds to it. +2 movement speed triples your movement speed and +3 movement speed quadruples your movement speed. If you have 30 speed and +3 movement speed you will move almost 12 tiles down the dungeon hallway before the paladin chasing you moves one square. (!) And you will move 4 squares down the hallway before Morgoth will move 1 square after you.

Another interesting thing about movement speed is it reduces the number of turns you take. So if you are running down the hallway with +3 speed, you will only tally 1 turn for every 4 squares moved in the dungeon. You thus are able to get very low turncounts in a game where you find a movement speed artifact early on.

Just to clarify, as per the name it is movement only. Not casting, attacking, using items et cetera.

It is a very strong mod if you need to move a lot (melee, repositioning, etc.).
