How do you deal with the giant Lice?

Those things are so annoying. They're like a hydra; kill one, more will replace it. If you don't kill them all beofre there are 8 of them, you're forced to flee. Is that just the way it is? Is there a potion or spell that can defeat them?

Some classes get a poison cloud spell which kills many at once. But for many characters walking away is the best option - preferably closing a door on your way out to contain the spread.

There are also Wands of Stinking Cloud which can be used effectively against them.

Giant Lice are god's gift to Angband players. From CL1 to CL23 in 5 minutes. Dig long straight hole, and kill.

But the usual method imis to close the door and leave. Lice are only a foretaste of much worse breeders after DL 1000-ones that blind; ones that confuse; and ones that shriek for help. In all cases, the solution is to evade them, shoot them before they breed, or teleport if they get out of hand. (A few of them can bash doors, but I forget which.)
