    Again, Sangband has done this, primarily to support the correct accenting of artifact names.

      Do you know whether this is done by converting all the user facing char*s into some sort of wide character structure? Or something easier and more hacky?

        Various versions support extended latin-1, but not unicode. Umlauts and other accents are supported. It's not a complicated fix. (I believe that it was made available as a patch, via NPP, in the newsgroup. But I am likely wrong.)
