I think your discovery of Kelek at dl 80 is exactly right. I hink of Mage as a challenge version of rogue: dive fast and evade like crazy. Only then will you prove a sufficiently pious acolyte of the RNG to be Worthy of great boons. That is, speed rings and Kelek.
