Well, i didn't exactly 'run out of light and get screwed', but I think that what I did is much worse than anything anyone else could have done...
When I decided to go beat angband, I got a paladin up to high lvls. And then, I enchanted stuff at dungeon lvl 1, while waiting for shops to restock. I had the palantire of westernees, and I didn't want to wear it while enchanting, since it drained EXP. So, I took it off, and just did it in a lit aria. Unfortunately, I was a bit more foolish than this, and very quickly hit all my macro buttons to do everything. Suffice to say...
In the end, I left the palantire on the ground and went back to town, thus losing the final permanent light source in the game.
Not a good moment... I promptly kicked morgoth's ass after that though, so it was all fine.
