    Roguelike Phylogeny

I'm sure this has been brought up before somewhere, but I wasn't able to find it on search.

Does such a thing exist? It would definitely be a difficult thing to create as I'm sure there is a lot of debate on what variant is descended from what.

    Might make a good poster.

Have you Googled for this? I'm sure it already exists, somewhere like roguebasin.

I did knock up a graph of relationships between *bands a long time ago in response to a thread about an "Angband family tree" on r.g.r.a, it's at http://isparp.co.uk/angband/graph.png (there's also http://isparp.co.uk/angband/graph2.png but I can't honestly remember why that's there or exactly how it differs from the first). Like I say, not current and certainly not comprehensive, but it still makes me chuckle when I see it.

I'd throw Diablo and ADoM in there somewhere. First time I ever played Diablo, I said to myself 'Wow, this is a graphical Angband!'

I wonder if Blizzard ever acknowledged the roguelike inspiration of Diablo.

Oh they did, many times. Bill Roper and Eric Schaeffer, two of the lead designers, are big roguelike fans, and aren't shy about saying so.

First time I played Angband, I thought, "Hey, it's turn-based Diablo!"

...maybe that should be advertised on rephial's frontpage. Good marketing ploy.
