I don't know why anyone plays hobbits. AFAICT, they are just kobolds with worse HP and melée, no RPois, and somewhat better spellcasting.

I recently discovered hobbits make fun priests - they can only start at 18/40 WIS, it's true, but that's easy to fix in the early game with amulets of wisdom.

They're like smaller, sneakier dwarves, and almost as wise, with better shooting. Not a bad mix for a priest - as I much as I love dwarf priests, their horrible stealth can really make life difficult.

... and better saving throws, better perception/searching, better device skill, better disarming, and better throwing/missile skill. Not sure if I've missed anything.

I don't get all the hobbit hate, I really like hobbits. I love kobolds too. I don't get why people play high elves so often. They and Dunadan seem kind of unfairly strong. You'll never catch me playing a high elf or a Dunadan.

But I think it does go to show that the races in Angband are pretty well designed and balanced for their to be so many arguments about which race everyone favours. Except for humans, they just suck.

Damned be those who use High Elves, for they are the race of the weak!

High elves are powerful but you get a 2x experience slowdown. Playing a high elf rogue conservatively, trust me, it makes a *lot* of difference.
The significance, however, is less in the endgame, when the levels make less difference (so I find). I'll never play hobbits because I despise the loss of strength. In the early game I h2h as much as I shoot, if not more like 20 times as much h2h (not exaggerated). I killed all the uniques straight up to Azog by h2h with my high elf rogue. I can't do that
                  with a hobbit.
If you really feel that high elves are overpowered, you can always increase the experience ratio in the edit files or lobby to have it increased. Oh well. Everyone has a style.
Human warrior, hm? I'd play it if it wasn't for the lack of magic.
