    I'm doomed!

OK, after finding a book of Mordenkainen's Escapes on the floor at 400', and now an Amulet of ESP on the floor at 800', I have a horrible sense of doom.

I have enough scrolls of Deep Descent to get me to 1500'. Should I use them now that I have ESP? I'm playing a mage and am currently level 13, with a int of 18/60 and a dex of 18, with a whole 85 hp and no resists.

Answered myself: no Free Action. So no. SI from High Elf.

Also, is stat gain still at 1500-1600 ft?
I miss autoscum... but not that much.

Wouldn't worry about lack of FA - just detect paralyzers. You might have a slightly difficult time surviving at that clvl that deep however, but it's manageable with a decent bow.

Stat pots still start appearing at 1500' (though any monster that drops items can drop them). They're very rare, however. I don't know whether it's feasible to hang around at 1500' to max your stats in recent versions.

For finding the potions on the floor, 1500' to 2000' is probably best but I haven't run the numbers or anything. Deeper in the dungeon things like orcs and trolls can start dropping them, so that makes up for the lower frequency of potions on the floor. Stat pots won't drop until the (dlevel + mlevel) / 2 >= 30 though, so keep that in mind (EDIT: this is wrong, see below).

I rarely have FA before 1500'. It's not a big deal as long as you watch out for the carrion crawlers, homunculi, basilisks, and ghasts.

If you've got a decent longbow, I'd truck it to 1500' asap. If you don't, I'd dive normally, looking for a good launcher or cash and sellables to buy a longbow and enchant-dam. I'd say if you've got decent damage output (ie +8 longbow) there's no reason not to go to stat gain.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe in 3.1 drops are determined by either monster level or dlevel, whichever is deeper.

im getting a lot more @s 2 stat gain lvls so would be nice 2 know for sure which way it works... i like 2 leave a lot of the smaller uniques so i can kill their guards for potions(and other good loot) and trying 2 workout the best lvls 2 start mowing them down

edit 2 add ps.... 2 stay on topic i would just keep diving and not worry about FA 2 much. i tend 2 find FA(or buy it) about 1250'(5 lvls after you are ment 2 stop without it)

Well I'll be! Here's line 2741 from monster/monster2.c, inside the monster_death() function of release 3.1.0b:

              Code:
/* Average monster level and current depth */
              level = MAX(p_ptr->depth, r_ptr->level);
It looks like they do drop items from either the dungeon or monster level, whichever is higher. Looks like the comment hasn't been updated though. So anything at all should be able to drop stat potions as soon as you hit 1500' huh?

Ok, I'm down to 1600'. I got there, then recalled to town.

My current shooter is a sling of xtra shots. boy, shots are heavy. But I do like extra shots. I have a longow at home with some arrows of Slay Evil... I had to leave them there to save weight. I'm using a ring of FA and a RoStr(+3) at this time, havn't found anyting better.

I'll dump a char as soon as I figure out how...

                -P

edit: Ok, I've figured out how to do a char dump, but now I can't find the file. #$%^& Vista.

Arrows of slay evil/holy might are some of the best medicine against Morgoth, but if you're not confident in your ability to get quite that far, I wouldn't blame you for using them before then. However, I'd keep them at home for the time being: you're in Water/Fire Hound territory, and it'd be a shame to waste them like that.

A sling of extra shots is a fine weapon, but being slowed down is never worth it. Carry less ammo, lighten up on other gear, or if you can't make it work switch to an enchanted longbow.

Make a dump by going to the "C"haracter screen and dumping to "f"ile. Then go to the ladder tab and post it.

edit: the dump file is in the lib\user folder.

Well, I've dumped it (successfully) about 5 times, and it tells me where it dumped, but when I go there, no file.

It is in program files, so it may not be writing there due to some 'feature' of windows. I might try moving the whole shebang.

                    -P

edit: I've just decided this doesn't make sense, since there is no trouble with pref files. Reading them, anyway. Do the files get hidden somehow?

It should show the full path when you are writing the file. Check it before you finish the dump.

In my entire Angband career I was only once lucky enough to find arrows of holy might. That was unfortunately when I got slaughtered by Sauron. ^^

Regarding the dump file: It is a .txt file with your charakter's name, not the savefile name. Because WinXP hides known extensions, if not told otherwise, it would be a file without the visible .txt extension, but with the text file icon.

The Windows 'feature' that has my vote for the most moronic one ever.

Some guy must have just been sitting in a boardroom somewhere sipping his latte and said "Hey, let's make it so people don't know if they're opening a picture or running a program - wouldn't that be fun?".

I dunno. search indexing is pretty moronic. At least hiding extensions doesn't put extreme wear and tear on your hard drive.
One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to bind them.
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness interrupt the movie.

That in particular is sort of daft, but the whole windows system of recognizing the type of files by their extensions is either.
