I fully support the change, however it might be useful to also change the description of the spells in the books.

I'd also use the occasion to bring back to the public eye the request made by a significant part of the community to merge the priest detect traps and detect stairs prayers - this seems like the right place to do it

I second the "priest detection" move--I already sent a patch about it to the mailing list (and posted it in the forums I think) so at this point it's just waiting for SVN acceptance.

Wow. That turns the almost useless mage spell into something reasonably effective. I've only ever used it seriously in NPP, where you can force big breathers to do only modest damage by standing off and plinking. And you are on a small level, so you can clear it before taking on the one dangerous monster.
