yikes, I just looked at your cfg, there are a lot of breath attacks... I have no idea what the higher elemental attacks would sounds like, other then shards being like a sandstorm or gravel getting thrown around... but gravity?

The hounds sound great with the breath sound right now.

The trouble with NC is that it might mean the game can't be bundled as a part of a commercial Linux distribution (like Redhat.) That hardly counts as "selling".

I also wanted to just jump in and say thanks. The effects are awesome, subtle and atmospheric enough I can even leave them on while watching TV, listening to an audiobook, placating SO, etc. Thank you!

OTOH, if Dubtrain wants to keep the sounds NC, not being bundled with RedHat &c is a small price to pay. They can still be bundled with all the NC Linux distros, which now number in the zillions.

It's totally awesome that someone has come out of the blue and provided a comprehensive set of high quality sounds which are free. It might even be enough to wake Leon Marrick up - he had a bit of trouble with the licences for the sounds for S 1.0, and I think he'd really appreciate these.

Yeah, I also used Redhat then (3.0.3 to 7.2), before I discovered Debian. It was a big step up from Slackware, which I used before.

Do you mean the monster death sounds (the various howls) or the player death sound (the evil laugh)? I'm open to suggestions. And it's easy enough to comment out anything that isn't working for you - for a long time I played with just the wall bump and the "I'm Hungry" sounds!

It's the monster death sound(s).
It's (or they are) high-pitched and kind of screechy. (It may be just the first one. I haven't investigated whether the OS X port treats multiple choice sounds properly.)

Monster afraid sound is similar, but it isn't bad.

I agree! I've actually removed the mco_howl_screech sound from the config file (you can redownload the whole pack or just save the linked config file or just edit out that one in your existing sound.cfg file) because it was annoying me too.

There should still be five other monster death sounds you are hearing. If not, then some kind of OSX weirdness may be choosing the last sound in all cases. That would suck - there are a lot of cool multiple choices in the config file.

Still working on a better monster flees sound, too. Maybe something just a bit more drawn out & fading away...

I'll try it some more but here are some quick requests (some of them probably involve changes in the code, I don't know what's currently possible and I guess you used all that was already available):

- can we have (light) footstep sounds when the player walk (and maybe another sound when he's running)?

- I understand you don't want the sounds to be too loud but I think the volume is (a bit) too low anyway. I often set the main volume of my computer very low (less than 15%) which is ok for most applications and I had to raise it to 50% to hear them. Having an option to set the volume in Angband would also help everyone setting it the way they prefer.

- Would it be possible to have an ambient sound played all the time? With the current system in Angband, sounds are played only when something happens and it lacks a feeling of continuity. I mean, currently, it's like "silence, sound, silence, sound..." and I find it disturbing.


As for having a link on Rephial, Takkaria is the maintainer and replied to the thread so he knows about your sound pack

Well, after playing a bit more with sound, I'm no longer sure about anything I suggested.

- playing with background music makes the lack of ambient less disturbing
- footsteps might get annoying (however they could be easily disabled by editing the config file)
- I found a way to get the sound level fit with my taste

The mac version definitely plays all the sounds randomly, FYI, not just the last one.

Cool cool, glad you are enjoying the sounds! Good news on the mac sounds, too.

Just to be clear, I can't do anything having to do with the code, I just made a new sound set based on Craig's Expanded Sound Patch. I think there is a "walk" tag, but it appears to be unimplemented in the code.

For the record, if anybody has the capability & desire to polish up the sound event tags a bit (different levels of ID, for instance, or monster death sounds by monster type, etc) I would definitely love to help with more sounds.

Of course, for ambient sounds it's probably best to play something you like in winamp etc. Now that I think about it, I'm sure I unconsciously designed the sound set that way because I've always got something on the stereo while I'm playing. ^^

Midnight Syndicate. They have a few CD's of ambient type music that would probably fill the bill, one of which is a D&D soundtrack.

Winamp's shoutcast radio feature, type in the search: Rivendell. The station plays nothing but fantasy scores.

Also try "ambient", although that gets a bit new-agey for me.
Hell I put on Rush's "2112" and "Farewell to Kings". Does the trick when the symphonic gets too dull.

Great work, Dub. I would also like to see more in this department. I am almost a purist, but I never really thought about the sound aspect, never used it. Imagine if all the monster types could have their own sounds. Maybe just a few sets, based on monster size or arbitrary sentience level... Imagine if "the (monster) wakes up" had a sound. Cone, ball, bolt, beam, starburst...do they all have different sounds? Leather armor/shield hit vs. metal sounds...there are so many possibilities. Stone-to-mud needs a distinct gloop-gloop sound, does it have one? Same with digging...maybe not four different sounds for magma, granite, quartz, and [tink!] permanent...that might be overkill...? Nah, never too many!

edit: almost forgot why I posted to begin with!

Question: can these be just drag-dropped into the other 'Bands as well, or is it strictly for use with Angband?
